The Warning That Stops Someone Making an Assumption

An installation with wiring to two versions of BS 7671 is a hazard for whoever works on it next. Red and black alongside brown and blue, and a conductor that looks familiar but isn't. Someone opens a junction box, sees a colour they recognise, and assumes.

This is the label that stops that. A caution notice at the board telling anyone working on the installation that both colour conventions are present, and that every conductor needs identifying before anything is altered.

Why It Looks Like a Warning

The other notices on a board are informational. This one is a warning, and it's designed to read as one.

A yellow caution panel with a hazard triangle registers differently from a plain white label. Someone glancing at a board takes in the colour before the words, and that's the point — the label has to interrupt an assumption before it's made.

When You Need One

Any installation where old and new cable colours coexist. In practice that means most properties wired before the harmonisation changeover and altered since:

• Partial rewires — new circuits added to an existing installation.
• Consumer unit changes on older wiring, where the board is new and the cabling isn't.
• Extensions and loft conversions — new work joined onto old.
• Circuit additions — a new shower, kitchen ring or garden supply on an otherwise older installation.
• Commercial alterations where phased upgrades have left mixed colours.
• EICRs — fitting a caution notice where mixed colours are found and none is present.

The label goes at the consumer unit or distribution board, where anyone working on the installation will see it before they start.

Branded to You

The bottom band carries your business name, phone number, email, website and any scheme accreditations you hold — NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA, CHAS or otherwise. More than one is fine.

The commercial logic is the same as the rest of the range. This label goes on and stays on, and the next contractor to open that board sees who did the work.
