The Notice That Tells Them to Press the Button

An RCD only protects anyone if it works, and the only way to know it works is to press the test button. BS 7671 asks for a notice at the origin of the installation telling the user to do exactly that, at regular intervals.

Most people never do it. The ones who do are the ones with a notice on the board telling them how — and telling them who to call if the device doesn't trip.

What's On It

The wording follows the BS 7671 notice for RCD-protected installations:

This installation, or part of it, is protected by a device which automatically switches off the supply if an earth fault develops. Test six-monthly by pressing the button marked 'T' or 'Test'. The device should switch off the supply and should then be switched on to restore the supply. If the device does not switch off the supply when the button is pressed, seek expert advice.

A bold IMPORTANT header sits above it, so the notice reads as a notice rather than blending into the rest of the board. Your logo, business name, phone number, email and any scheme accreditation run across the bottom.

Why "Seek Expert Advice" Is the Point

The last line of the notice is where this sticker earns its keep commercially.

Someone presses the test button, nothing happens, and they're standing in front of a board being told to seek expert advice. If your name and number are printed underneath, you're the expert they call.

It's the same logic as the periodic inspection notice, but triggered by a fault rather than a date. Between the two, you've got your details on the board for both scenarios that bring someone back to it.

Branded to You

The bottom band carries your business name, phone number, email and logo, plus any scheme accreditation you hold — NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA or otherwise.

On landlord and commercial work in particular, a scheme logo on the board does quiet work for you long after the job's finished.
