A periodic inspection notice does two things at once. It satisfies BS 7671, which requires a notice recording when the installation was last inspected and when it's next due. And it puts your name and number on the board at the exact moment someone realises the date has passed.

Every EICR you carry out should end with one of these going on. Twelve months later, when the landlord's agent or the new owner checks the board, yours is the number they see.

What's On It

The wording follows BS 7671:

This installation should be periodically inspected and tested and a report on its condition obtained, as prescribed in the IET Wiring Regulations BS 7671.

Below that, two dated fields you complete on site:

• Date of last inspection
• Recommended date of next inspection

And across the bottom, your logo, business name, phone number, email and any scheme accreditation you hold.

The header is a bold IMPORTANT band, so the notice reads as a notice rather than blending into the rest of the board.

This is the part worth thinking about commercially.

A periodic inspection notice is the only sticker on the board with a date on it that will eventually expire. When it does, someone reads it — and if your details are underneath, you're the obvious person to call. It's a reminder to book work, printed at your expense once and working for years.

Include your NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA logo alongside your details. On landlord and commercial work in particular, a scheme logo on the board does quiet work for you.

Vinyl needs a permanent marker. Ballpoint and gel pens won't mark it reliably, which is why a Sharpie comes with every order.

Every order includes a Sharpie marker. There's no point supplying a sticker with two date fields on it and leaving you to find a pen that'll write on vinyl.

Where They Go

On or beside the consumer unit, distribution board or origin of the installation — somewhere it'll be found by whoever next opens the board.

• Landlord safety work — where a five-year interval applies to rented domestic property and the dates get checked.

Can I use any pen to write the dates?
Permanent marker only. A Sharpie is included free with every order — ballpoint and gel pens won't mark vinyl reliably.

Will the writing survive?
Yes. Permanent marker won't smudge or lift once dry, and the vinyl itself is weather-resistant.
