Double-Sided Blockout PVC

The material matters more here than on most outdoor banners, because both faces are seen.

A lamp post banner is viewed from both directions of traffic. Standard PVC printed on both sides shows ghosting — a dark design on one face bleeds faintly through to the other. Double-sided blockout PVC has an opaque core between the two printed faces, so neither side shows through.

It's also a heavier grade than a standard banner, which is what it needs to be hanging in the wind at four metres for months at a time.

The two sides don't have to match. Supply separate artwork if you want different messaging facing each direction.

The Hardware

Brackets are weatherproof aluminium castings with GRP tubes — aluminium because it doesn't rust, and glass-reinforced plastic because it flexes rather than fatiguing in constant wind loading.

The banner has pole pockets top and bottom, so it slides onto the GRP tubes and sits under tension rather than flapping. Two securing eyelets hold it in place.

Extra-large jubilee clips are supplied for fixing the brackets to the post. No drilling, no permanent fixings, and the brackets can be repositioned for height — useful when posts vary or when you want the banner clear of a bus shelter or parked vehicles.

Hardware carries a 12 month guarantee.

Worth raising early, because it catches people out.

Lamp posts are almost always owned by the local council or the highways authority, and attaching anything to one usually needs their consent. Most councils operate a licensing scheme for lamp post banners, often through the highways department or a town centre management team, and some charge per post per month.

Private sites are simpler — a retail park, a university campus, a business park or a hospital site will have its own facilities team, and permission is generally a conversation rather than an application.

Worth sorting before the artwork, not after.

Designing a Lamp Post Banner

A tall, narrow format seen from below at speed. That changes what works.

Vertical layouts only. At 800 x 2000mm the format is strongly portrait. A logo and three words stacked works; a horizontal strapline doesn't.

Design for the angle. The banner sits several metres up, so most people see it looking upwards and foreshortened. Keep the key message in the upper half where it's clearest.

Allow for the pole pockets. The top and bottom sections are used for the weld and pocket, so treat those strips as quiet areas — background only, no text or logos.

Resolution at two metres. An image that looks sharp on screen can fall apart at full size. Check photographs are genuinely high resolution rather than upscaled.

A free template is available, with eyelet positions marked. Check those marks have been removed before exporting your print-ready file.

Replacement Graphics

The brackets outlast the campaign by years. Replacement banners can be ordered on their own and swapped over in minutes, so a seasonal programme means new graphics rather than new hardware each time.

Custom banner heights can be arranged on request if the standard 2000mm doesn't suit the posts you're working with.
